Hammondsport Central School District Students Trained in Emergency Response through The Generosity of the American Heart Association
On Monday- December 18, 2023, each member of the sophomore class at Hammondsport Junior/Senior high was trained in CPR(Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), AED(Automated External Defibrillator) use and first aid. This training was made possible by the generosity of the American Heart Association’s grant of $10,000 to the Hammondsport district to enhance both the number of AEDs and the number of trained and certified individuals that can respond effectively to emergency situations.
(Christine Towner (Steuben County Office for the Aging), Laurie Mault (The Institute for Human Services, Inc (IHS)), and Krystle Blencowe (IHS).
Rural communities are faced with a shortage of EMT (Emergency Medical Technicians), and an increased response time based upon geography. Through the use of the grant funds and the skilled trainers from the Steuben Rural Health Network our school has created a pipeline of individuals who have the skills and confidence to respond to emergency situations in their community. In addition, the $10,000 grant allowed for the purchase of additional AEDs to allow placement of these devices in outside locations on our school campus to provide greater accessibility and lower response time. The training for our sophomore students and the additional AEDs enhances our ability to meet our number one priority, which is a safe school environment.
